Colour lithograph on wove paper, private collection. \u00a9 Peter Sch\u00e4lchli.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Born in 1864 in Albi into an aristocratic family and taken at the age of 36 by syphilis and a stroke (1901), Toulouse-Lautrec honed his skills in Parisian ateliers <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/L%C3%A9on_Bonnat\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/L%C3%A9on_Bonnat\">L\u00e9on Bonnat<\/a> (1833\u20131922) and <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fernand_Cormon\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fernand_Cormon\">Fernand Cormon<\/a> (1845-1924), two masters recognised by the academies of painting. He finally settled in Montmartre and chose the local caf\u00e9s and cabarets as subjects for his studies: <em>The Japanese Divan<\/em>, <em>the Moulin Rouge<\/em>, <em>the Ambassadors<\/em>\u2026 All of these were major centres of the marginalised bohemian lifestyle and arts of that era, whose artistic movements ultimately became the most admired of the late 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-les-mondes-de-toulouse-lautrec\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Les_mondes_de_Toulouse-Lautrec\"><\/span>The worlds of Toulouse-Lautrec<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Toulouse-Lautrec\u2019s works serve as a true mirror of the society of his time. Drawing inspiration from the various circles he moved in, they offer a glimpse of his urban surroundings, the personalities who brought them to life, the material culture of the late 19th century and, on a more personal level, his family and friends. This expression refers to the banter of artists and regulars in taverns, united by a spirit of genuine camaraderie that is particularly evident in the painting <em>Bruant's Interior: The Mirliton<\/em>. A hedonistic, raw and vibrant energy that is reflected in Lautrec\u2019s colourful posters. So much so that it transformed the capital\u2019s public spaces \u2013 then covered with his creations \u2013 into a veritable \u00ab <em>Open-air museum <\/em>\u00bbaccording to the art critic <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gustave_Kahn\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gustave_Kahn\">Gustave Khan<\/a>. This artistic vision soon spread beyond France\u2019s borders, crossing the Pyrenees in particular: Lautrec\u2019s works made their way as far as Barcelona, where they came into the hands of the young Picasso. Fascinated, he began to dream of Paris and soon made his way to what was then the beating heart of European bohemian art. <br>Toulouse-Lautrec thus succeeded in capturing the artistic spirit of Paris through his posters, notably by featuring personalities whose fame had taken on an international dimension. One name immediately springs to mind when one thinks of bohemian Paris in the late 19th century and Lautrec\u2019s world: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Goulue\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Goulue\">La Goulue<\/a><\/em> (1866\u20131929). Born Louise Weber, this Moulin Rouge dancer \u2013 an iconic figure of the French Cancan \u2013 embodied a free-spirited, defiant and daring artistic bohemianism that both shocked and fascinated the bourgeoisie. At least, that is the view of the dancer <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Avril\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Avril\">Jane Avril<\/a> (1868\u20131943), who believed that the artist had played a major part in her rise to fame. The poster featuring her, chosen as the exhibition\u2019s visual, was enough to catapult her to fame within the space of a few months. <br>Lautrec's posters became so successful that he was asked to illustrate the arrival in Paris, at the Folies-Berg\u00e8re, of an international star: <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lo%C3%AFe_Fuller\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lo%C3%AFe_Fuller\">Lo\u00efe Fuller<\/a> (1862\u20131928). This work is all the more important as Bruant would later become one of the painter's close friends.<br>At this time, Bruant welcomed Lautrec almost every evening to the cabaret where he performed, not without greeting him with his famous: \u00ab <em>That face! It's really not possible, that face!<\/em> \u00bbThis friendship is also demonstrated by decisive support for the artist's career. One day, when Pierre Ducarre, the director of the Caf\u00e9 des Ambassadeurs, refused to display the posters designed by Lautrec to advertise Bruant's shows for fear of shocking his audience, Bruant threatened not to go on stage. Faced with this pressure, the director eventually gave way and agreed to display the work. The success was such that Bruant then had the image reproduced in large numbers to promote his tours and his various performances, each time only changing the name of the venue where he was appearing. Some are the famous posters of\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alfons_Mucha\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alfons_Mucha\">Alphonse Mucha<\/a> (1860-1939), famous for its shows and entertainment. In this exhibition, however, Toulouse-Lautrec highlights quite different objects, even though his work may have been influenced by the style of this other great contemporary artist. Each object promoted by Lautrec thus constitutes a window onto a new or booming practice in Parisian society at the end of the 19th century. This can include sport and the renewed relationship with nature as a space for rejuvenation, as exemplified by this advertisement for an American bicycle chain renowned for its durability.<br><br>In a more intellectual vein, the artist also appears to have maintained close ties with creators working in other artistic and literary fields. He thus takes it upon himself to promote <em><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Revue_blanche\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Revue_blanche\">The White Review<\/a><\/em>, one of the most influential publications of its time, which welcomed many prominent figures from intellectual and artistic life at the end of the century. Even today, this tradition of discovering and supporting new literary voices continues, notably through <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Nouvelle_Revue_fran%C3%A7aise\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Nouvelle_Revue_fran%C3%A7aise\">New French Review<\/a>, many of whose authors frequently appear in the celebrated white collection of Gallimard editions. Athens, Basil &amp; Elise Goulandris Foundation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Beyond the public figures he immortalises, Toulouse-Lautrec also gives an important place to more familiar characters, who are found repeatedly in his work. <br>We have already mentioned \u00ab <em>English <\/em>\u00bbbut his cousin Gabriel Tapi\u00e9 de C\u00e9leyran, who joined him in Paris to continue his medical studies, cannot be overlooked. While Lautrec introduced him to the pleasures of Parisian nightlife, Gabriel, in turn, opened the doors of the medical world to him. The artist did not hesitate to depict him in his study environment, at the hospital, and also to paint his master, the famous surgeon P\u00e9an. However, he also showed him in more relaxed moments, particularly at the theatre or in other social settings. Through these various representations, Lautrec composed true scenes of modern life, close in spirit to the genre scenes painted by <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean_B%C3%A9raud\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean_B%C3%A9raud\">Jean B\u00e9raud<\/a> (1849-1935).<br><br>Another world, both intimate and very present in Parisian male circles, is also represented by Toulouse-Lautrec: that of brothels. He painted the prostitute Elsa there several times, as well as scenes of flirtation and attempted seduction between clients and prostitutes, thus restoring a daily aspect of these places. According to Gilles Genty, the artist was particularly struck by <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francisco_de_Goya\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francisco_de_Goya\">Goya<\/a> (1746-1828), and this influence illuminates his approach. Lautrec himself summarises his approach with a frequently quoted phrase: \u00ab <em>I'm showing what I saw <\/em>\". <br><br>More than two centuries later, we indeed continue to see Paris through the eyes of this artist, whose sensitive and unique vision was able to sublimate its most striking aspects.
