The precious ceremonial ornament, woven from natural fibres and covered with thousands of red ibis feathers, will leave the National Museum in Copenhagen in 2024 to join the collections of the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro.
There are only 11 known Tupinamb\u00e1 coats in the world, made between the 16th and 17th centuries, and all of them are kept in European museums. Made entirely from reddish feathers, they are considered a rare relic, a cultural symbol of the indigenous Tupinamb\u00e1 people who live along the Brazilian coast. According to explorers who spent time in Brazil in the 16th century, the Tupinamb\u00e1 were cannibals. According to French ethnologist and anthropologist H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Clastre, the Tupinamb\u00e1 were \"the most powerful cannibals in the world\". \"The Spanish Jesuits calculated that, in the space of about a century, the Chiriguano (a member of the Tupi family) devoured 60,000 Chan\u00e9 Indians (2)\".<\/em>.<\/p>
