The Marquesans have developed a monumental habitat and very specific sculptures, the tikis<\/em>. More than 700 archaeological and legendary sites have been recorded in the archipelago, and the inventory is far from complete. They bear witness to a large Polynesian population before the arrival of the West, which managed to maintain itself despite its isolation and to build a unique and original culture.<\/strong><\/p>
