Scheuchzer's cottongrass (Eriophorum scheuchzeri) is found in damp areas at high altitudes, such as marshes and the peaty banks of lakes and streams. It can be recognised at a distance by the white, cottony, silky tassels on its slender stem. In the past, the Icelanders used to harvest the feathers of the cottongrass to wad the inside of their clothes.
