Editions Gallimard has just published a comprehensive book for families looking for experiences outside the usual tourist circuits, in France and abroad.
For author Marie Faure-Ambroise, every moment of early childhood leaves an indelible mark on children's emotional memory. As well as broadening their vision of the world and developing their ability to adapt, travel helps to create memories as a family while awakening their curiosity and thirst for adventure.
The destinations are classified into six themes: "adventures and animals", "long weekends", "ultra exotic but not so far away", "roaming", "cultural trips" and "at the end of the world". For each country, the author describes the main sites to discover, original and unusual itineraries to escape mass tourism, not-to-be-missed stops and ideas for meeting the local people. A map of the country indicates the places mentioned, and a "practical" section gives tips adapted to each destination, such as: how to get to the country, the best travel periods, culinary specialities, places to sleep or eat, souvenirs to bring back, clothes to pack, etc.
The book also looks at medical issues to help you prepare for your trip, deal with small talk during transport, manage jet lag and deal with illnesses that can occur on the spot.
You'll also learn how to organise a trip with a baby, what to do with a teenager, how to travel when pregnant and the essentials for family camping.
Each country offers an unusual experience or age-appropriate activities. For example, in Jordan, you can spend a night in the Wadi Rum desert or meet the Bedouins; in Egypt, take a night train between Cairo and Luxor; in Camargue, sleep in the Cabanettes in the middle of rice fields; in Namibia, camp near a ghost village.
As you read through the destinations described, you realise that this book is not just for families, as it is packed with relevant advice and good addresses. Unlike a traditional travel guide, it can inspire us to choose our next trip and discover authentic places that combine a change of scenery, culture and the art of living.
