Yerevan, the heartbeat of a reborn country

The journey begins in Yerevan, It's a sunny, contrasting capital, where monumental squares meet lively cafés. Between the majesty of the Place de la République, the breathtaking views from la Cascade and contemporary museums, the city is asserting a modern identity without ever renouncing its roots. Gastronomy, generous and fragrant, is already becoming a universal language.

On the road to symbols: Ararat, wine and healing waters

Leaving the capital, Armenia reveals its founding imagination. À Khor Virap, the first holy place in Christian Armenia, the Mount Ararat (located in Turkey) rises up, mythical and omnipresent. Rising to 5,137 metres, it is an emblematic mountain not only for Armenia but also for biblical history. According to tradition, this is where Noah's Ark was stranded after the Flood. Further on, Areni perpetuates one of the world's oldest winemaking traditions, before Jermuk, With its lush green landscapes and mineral springs, the region is renowned for its spa.

Monasteries and canyons: stone and vertigo

The route then plunges into spectacular scenery. The monastic complex of Noravank emerges from the heart of a canyon of glowing cliffs, while Goris with its rock formations and troglodytic dwellings. Here, nature seems to have sculpted history with its bare hands.
Highlight of the trip: the flight over the gorges of the Vorotan - a canyon some 2.7 km wide and 500 m deep - on board the cable car Wings of Tatev. Suspended between heaven and earth, your gaze takes in the immensity before reaching one of the country's spiritual jewels. Visit Tatev monastery, This austere, majestic site is a reminder of the extent to which faith, knowledge and isolation shaped medieval Armenia. At Khndzoresk, the suspension bridge adds a touch of adrenalin to this timeless journey.

The sources of Armenian Christianity

À Etchmiadzin, Armenia, the spiritual heart of the country, recounts its founding role in the history of Christianity. Not far away, the ruins of Zvartnots, One of the world's most important UNESCO-listed archaeological sites, it is an almost mystical sight, especially when Mount Ararat appears on the horizon. Diving at Lake Sevanà

At an altitude of almost 2,000 metres, the Lake Sevan - the third largest lake in Western Asia - takes the breath away. Sandwiched between high mountains, this lake was described by Maxim Gorky, visiting the region, as « a piece of sky that fell to earth among the mountains ». Its blue-green waters, the mountains in the background and the monastery of Sevanavank create a picture of great serenity. Time slows down over lunch by the water, with fish on the menu. Salmo ischchan, a trout endemic to the lake.

Latest glimpses of Yerevan, between knowledge and craftsmanship

The return to Yerevan provides an insight into Armenia through its texts and artefacts. Visit Matenadaran, one of the world's most important repositories of ancient manuscripts, and the National History Museum offer the key to understanding a resilient people. In the markets, carpets, ceramics and sculptures extend the journey through gesture and material.
