Facing the sea, the Domaine du Rayol in the Var is undoubtedly one of the most inspiring places on the French Riviera. Much more than a garden, it was conceived by the landscape designer Gilles Clément like a journey through many landscapes, gathering vegetation from California, Chile, South Africa, Australia, the Canaries, and the Mediterranean basin. At a time when climate change is permanently transforming these landscapes, the Domaine du Rayol appears as an open-air laboratory and a formidable tool for raising awareness.

A garden saved from developers

The history of the Domaine du Rayol begins in the early 20th century. In 1908, Alfred Théodore CourmeA Parisian businessman, originally from Bormes-les-Mimosas, acquired nearly forty hectares of maquis overlooking the Baie du Figuier. He had villas, a monumental pergola, and acclimatisation gardens inspired by his travels built there. Palms, eucalyptus, agaves, and mimosas then formed an exotic backdrop facing the sea.
In 1934, the estate passed into the hands of the aeronautical engineer Henri Potez. The garden was enriched with hundreds of exotic species and became an elegant holiday residence. But after changing hands several times, the site gradually fell into disrepair. In the 1970s, property development projects even threatened its very existence.
The turning point came in 1989 when the Coastal Conservation Agency bought the estate to protect it for good. He then entrusted its restoration to the landscape architect Gilles Clément, who designed his famous «Jardin des Méditerranées» here.
What makes the Domaine du Rayol unique is its concept. Forget traditional botanical gardens organised by plant families. Here, Gilles Clément tells stories through landscapes.

Visitors discover the majestic Australian eucalyptus trees, their colour-changing trunks capturing the Mediterranean light. Further on, the imposing aloes of Southern Africa appear, their spectacular blooms attracting birds and pollinating insects.

In the areas dedicated to California, fragrant sage, blue-flowered ceanothus and manzanita create a delicate landscape where every plant seems to have found its natural place.

The Chilean section, meanwhile, showcases the puya, remarkable plants with a prehistoric appearance that are capable of thriving in extreme conditions. They are native mainly to the mountains and arid regions of Chile, Peru and the Andes. They belong to the Bromeliaceae family, the same as the pineapple.
Here, Puya Alpestris produces turquoise-blue flowers with bright orange stamens.

Visitors will also come across many iconic Mediterranean species: arbutus, mastic, myrtle, rockrose, lavender, everlasting flowers, holm oaks and Aleppo pines.

The sea on the horizon

One of the distinctive features of the Domaine du Rayol is its intimate connection with the Mediterranean. The footpaths lead to exceptional viewpoints where the sea seems to extend the garden right to the horizon. Here, the landscape does not end at the estate’s boundaries: it merges into the deep blue of Rayol Bay, creating a constant dialogue between the land and the sea.

«in a planetary manner" with nature rather than against it »The gardens give the impression of having always been there, as if they had sprung up spontaneously between the umbrella pines and the rocks overlooking the Mediterranean. It is worth noting that no labels are found to present the species, unlike many botanical gardens.

A visit to the Domaine du Rayol feels like a journey through the world’s landscapes, condensed into a single spot overlooking the Mediterranean. Here, every path and every planting bed tells a story of distant climates and subtle adaptations to different environments. As you stroll through the garden, your gaze wanders between the textures of the foliage and the infinite blue of the open sea, as if the garden and the sea were endlessly echoing one another. You leave this haven with that rare sensation: that of having travelled far whilst remaining in the same place.
